Collins names football staff

New Cardinal head football coach Steven Collins has assembled a staff with more than 50 years of coaching experience, and said he will fill two more positions by mid-March. "This is the best staff I have had to work with over the past 20 years I have coached," Collins said Monday. "All of us have playing and coaching experience, along with football knowledge."

Principal David Bolen and Collins announced the hiring of eight assistants Monday (Feb. 13), with seven of the eight already working at GRC, and the other starting as a business teacher Monday.

Joining Collins are Brandon Brewer, Robbie Graham, Bob Howard, Dustin Howard, Kyle Johnson, Elton Parish, Brandon Powell and James Stults.

BRANDON BREWER

Brandon Brewer has been a teacher for eight years. He will join GRC as a business teacher next week after six years of teaching marketing at Montgomery County High School. Prior to his employment at Montgomery County, he taught marketing at East Carter High School in Grayson for two years.

Brewer currently resides in Powell County with his wife, Gretchen (who is an English teacher at Powell County High), and their newborn daughter, Evalee Hope Brewer.

After graduating Powell County High School, he attended Union College where he received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a double minor in finance and marketing. After completing an internship with Northwestern Mutual, he enrolled at Morehead State University. He earned a Master's degree in the Arts of Teaching while at Morehead State University.

 Brandon has ten years of varsity high school coaching experience. During this time, he has coached both defensive and offensive linemen as well as special teams.

Brandon has coached in thirteen playoff games and twice upsetting the #1 seed. He has also assisted 2 different programs to their first home playoff games in over 10 years.

As a player, Brandon has experience at every position along the defensive line. While attending Union College, he was a two time team captain. Brandon was also named to the Mid-South Conference All Academic Team twice (2001, 2002), Mid-South Conference 2nd Team Defensive Tackle (2002) and Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week in 2002.

 DUSTIN HOWARD

Dustin Howard has been a GRC assistant since 2004.
He was GRC's offensive and defensive line coach from 2006-2011. He was junior varsity head coach and JV offensive coordinator from 2008-2011, and he coached wide receivers and linebackers during the 2004-2005 season.

Howard played college football at Centre College from 1997 to 2001.

Howard is GRC's special education facilitator, a position he assumed in the fall of 2011. Since 2003, he has been the district and school psychologist. From 2002-2003, he was a reading interventionist teacher.

After receiving his B.S. from Centre College in 2001, Howard went on to earn his master's in education from the University of Kentucky in 2004. He holds a rank 1 specialist in education (Ed.S), and a principal certificate.

 BOB HOWARD

Coach Howard is in his 15th year teaching at George Rogers Clark High School.  Coach Howard has previously coached the Freshman Team from 1996-2003 under Coach Don Danko/Marty Joyce, Steve Ely, and Paul Columbia respectively.  During those years, Coach Howard served as the Freshman Team Defensive Coordinator.

Coach Howard started his playing career at GRC where he played Linebacker.  He played one season collegiately at Kentucky Wesleyan College before transferring to EKU where he received his teaching degree.  Before he started his teaching career at GRC, Coach Howard spent four years as a Minor League Umpire in Professional Baseball.  He began teaching in the Clark Co. school system in the 97-98 school year. 
 
Coach Howard resides in Lexington, KY with his wife, Sherry Howard, and children, Christian, Robby, Sarah, and Caroline. 

K.B. JOHNSON JR.

A first-year math teacher at GRC, Coach Johnson played football at Army as a running back and was a member of the 1985 Peach Bowl championship team. Coach Johnson also played baseball as an outfielder at the University of Cincinnati.

Coach Johnson began coaching football in 2003 at Northwest McDermott High School in Ohio. He coached at Wurtland (KY) Middle School in 2005 and Greenup County High School from 2006-2008 and in 2010-11. In 2009, he coached at Portsmouth Notre Dame High School in Ohio.

A native of Portsmouth, Ohio, Johnson earned his B.A. in mathematical Sciences from the University of Cincinnati in 1990, and his master’s degree in teaching from Morehead State University in 2007. He earned his master’s degree in school administration from Morehead in 2010.

Coach Johnson is married to Jackie Weber-Johnson. She is currently a teacher in Portsmouth, Ohio at Vern Riffe School. The Johnsons have two sons: Kyle is 17 years old and Joshua (JJ) is 11 years old.

• Interesting Trivia: Coach Johnson’s former teammate at Army, Mike Sullivan, is the QB Coach for the Super Bowl Champion, New York Giants.  Coach Johnson once held several baseball records at the University of Cincinnati; however, they have since been broken by Kevin Youkilis – now of the Boston Red Sox.  Coach Johnson’s father was also a two-sport athlete in college.  Bruce Johnson played baseball and basketball at Ohio University.  He had to guard Jerry Lucas in high school and Jerry West in college.

ELTON PARISH

Elton Parish is currently a Guidance Counselor at George Rogers Clark.  He played collegiately at Howard University in Washington, DC from 1989-1992.  Coach Parish played outside linebacker.

He earned his B.A. majoring in History and a minor in Secondary Education (1994).  He earned his Master Degree from Howard University in Guidance and Counseling (1996).

He began coaching high school football and track in 1998 in Forestville, Maryland at Forestville High School.  He was the defensive coordinator and coached various positions, such as linebackers, defensive backs, defensive line and offensive line.

While at Forestville, he was part of Maryland State 1A Champions in 1998 and Maryland State Runner-ups in 1999.  In 2005, Mr. Parish became the defensive coordinator at John F. Kennedy HS in Silver Springs, MD.

In 2007, Coach Parish moved to Lexington.  In Lexington, Coach Parish was defensive coordinator for Leestown Middle School in Lexington for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Coach Parish currently resides with his wife, Lawyna, and son, Elton Jr., in Lexington.     

BRANDON POWELL

Brandon Powell is in his first year at GRC. He monitors student behaviors as part of the PASS program.

Coach Powell is originally from Oakridge, Oregon, where he played high school football and participated in track & field until his 2003 graduation.

He moved to Winchester in the summer of 2003. Coach Powell graduated from Morehead State University in 2009 with a degree in exercise science.

He is currently finishing a master's degree in special education at the University of the Cumberlands.

Coach Powell is working with the players in strength training and conditioning.

"I have many goals for our team and firmly believe that our program’s outcome will be apparent when we take the field in late August," he said. "I am excited to be a part of the George Rogers Clark staff, not only on the field but in the classroom."

 JAMES STULTS

Coach Stults is in his 14th season at George Rogers Clark High School.  Coach Stults has spent the last 13 seasons as the Defensive Coordinator and will resume the same duties under Coach Collins.  Coach Stults has had variety of duties while at GRC but will coach inside linebackers and assist in the strength and conditioning program along with several other duties. 

Coach Stults started his collegiate career at Campbellsville University, and then transferred to Morehead State University playing four years for the Eagles.  Coach Stults played Middle Linebacker and was one of MSU’s leading tacklers his junior and senior year.  His senior year he was the defensive captain for the Eagles that had a 9-2 record. 

Coach Stults also teaches at GRC.  He teaches Health and Physical Education in the Ninth Grade Academy.  He is currently in his ninth year of teaching. 

He and his wife reside in Winchester, KY.  They have two sons, Evan and Xander, and are expecting their third child in June.   

 ROBBIE GRAHAM

Coach Graham will handle the team's administrative tasks.
