GRC teachers begin Reading Initiative

The Reading Initiative for Student Excellence, also known as R.I.S.E., began this fall at G.R.C. as a program seeking to increase the percentage of students reading for fun, the percentage of teachers reading for fun, and to increase the use of reading strategies across the curriculum.  The fuel for this “rising” program is a breadth of enticing prizes.

For every hour that a student spends reading for fun, they can submit a “lottery ticket.” This is to be filled out and signed by a parent or teacher to ensure that they have, indeed, spent an hour reading.  For every hour that a teacher spends reading for fun or for every reading strategy they use in class, they can also submit a “lottery ticket” to be filled out and signed by a student.

Every two weeks, one student ticket and one teacher ticket is drawn for a small prize: a free homework pass or gift card to a local restaurant, department store, or entertainment venue.

For every 50 hours a student or teacher spends reading for fun, they will both be entered to win the grand prize.  Both a teacher and a student will receive a brand new Ipad.

The goal is to see the short term benefits of extrinsic motivation to read spark an intrinsic motivation to read that will last a life time.

Legislation adds End of Course assessments

Senate Bill 1, enacted in the 2009 KY General Assembly, requires a new public school assessment program beginning this school year. The end-of-course (EOC)assessment is a research-based exam given to assess the mastery of Kentucky's content standards. EOC benchmark assessments will be administered throughout the year as the student progresses in each course.

Principal David Bolen explains the End of Course Assessment and GRC's decisions surrounding the new legislation.

Attendance Policy

Absences – page 24 (handbook)
A note from a parent or guardian must be turned into the attendance office within two school days of the student's return to school.  After the second day, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Tardy to School – page 26
Students are allowed 6 parent-notes per school year for excused tardies to school and must be turned in the day following the tardy to be excused.  Failure to attend detentions for being tardy will result in the student being ineligible for extra-curricular activities and events (i.e. athletics, dances, etc.)

All Day Absences – page 26
Students may use parent notes for 6 absences during the school year.  These notes shall be turned in by the second day student returns to school.  Beyond the 6th parent note, the student must have doctor's note.
College visits do count against the 6 parent notes.

When a student has 4 or more unexcused absences in the first semester, then he/she may not participate in extra-curricular and/or co-curricular activities (examples:  athletics, Soiree, FFA trips, chorus concerts, band concerts, etc.)

When a student has 6 or more unexcused absences for the school year, then he/she may not participate in extra-curricular and/or co-curricular activities (examples:  athletics, Senior  Trip, Prom, FFA trips, chorus concerts, band concerts, etc.)  If a senior student has 8 or more unexcused absences for the school year, then he/she is ineligible to participate in the Graduation Ceremony.

Four unexcused absences in a semester results in loss of parking permit for 10 days.  Six unexcused absences in a school year will result in the loss of a parking permit for the remainder of the year.
